About Jardim de Santa Bárbara
Braga's most beautiful garden, a formal garden in 17th-century style beside the Archbishop's Palace with colourful geometric flower beds, baroque azulejo-tiled walls, and one of the most photographed settings in northern Portugal.
The Jardim de Santa Bárbara is the most photographed and beloved garden in Braga, a formal parterre garden in 17th-century style set against the medieval Gothic arcade of the old Archbishop's Palace. The garden was laid out in the early 1950s by the architect José Cardoso da Silva on the site of a former orchard, in the style of a 17th-century Portuguese formal garden. The geometric flower beds are planted with a riot of colourful flowers, roses, lavender, and seasonal bedding plants, arranged in intricate patterns against a background of trimmed topiary. The garden is framed on one side by the Gothic arcade and tower of the Paço dos Arcebispos (Archbishop's Palace, now housing the city archives) and on another by baroque-tiled walls covered in 18th-century blue-and-white azulejos. A statue of Saint Barbara, the garden's namesake, stands at the centre.
Did you know? Despite its 17th-century appearance, the Jardim de Santa Bárbara was actually laid out in the early 1950s by architect José Cardoso da Silva, the design is so faithful to authentic Portuguese baroque garden style that most visitors assume it is genuinely old, making it one of the finest exercises in historical garden recreation in Portugal.
