About Theatro Circo de Braga

Braga's magnificent 1915 Art Nouveau theatre and circus venue, restored to full glory in 2009, now the principal cultural venue of northern Portugal for music, theatre, and performance, a treasured symbol of the city's cultural ambition.

The Theatro Circo de Braga is one of the most beautiful and historically significant theatres in Portugal. It was built between 1911 and 1915 to designs by the architect João de Moura Coutinho, in an eclectic Art Nouveau style that reflects the cultural ambitions of the early Portuguese Republic. The theatre was designed to serve a dual purpose, as a stage theatre for dramatic and operatic performances, and as a circus ring for equestrian and acrobatic shows, hence the distinctive circular auditorium that could be reconfigured for either use. The theatre fell into disrepair during the mid-20th century and was eventually closed. After a major restoration project, it was reopened in 2009 with its original Art Nouveau decoration fully restored, and is now the leading venue for performing arts in northern Portugal.

The Theatro Circo was designed with a circular auditorium that could be reconfigured as a sawdust circus ring for equestrian and acrobatic shows, in the early 20th century, the same venue would host opera one week and a travelling circus the next, reflecting the broad popular entertainment culture of the period.
