About Episcopal Palace of Braga
The vast Archbishop's Palace complex, one of the largest episcopal palaces in the world, a sprawling ensemble of buildings from the 14th to 18th centuries, now housing the city library, archives, and the beautiful Jardim de Santa Bárbara.
The Episcopal Palace of Braga, Paço dos Arcebispos, is one of the largest episcopal palace complexes in the world, a sprawling ensemble of towers, galleries, wings, and courtyards built and rebuilt over five centuries of archiepiscopal patronage. The complex began in the 14th century under Archbishop Gonçalo Pereira and was greatly expanded in the 15th, 17th, and 18th centuries. The medieval wing features the beautiful Gothic arcade visible from the Jardim de Santa Bárbara, one of the finest examples of medieval secular Gothic architecture in Portugal. The baroque wings were added by the great reforming archbishops of the 17th and 18th centuries, including the remarkable Archbishop Rodrigo de Moura Teles. The palace was the residence and administrative centre of the Primates of Iberia for over 500 years. Today it houses the public library, the municipal archive, and the rector's office of the University of Minho.
