About Braga Cathedral

The oldest cathedral in Portugal, with construction begun in 1070 under Bishop Pedro, a Romanesque core, Manueline chapels, gilded baroque organs, and the tomb of Count Henry of Burgundy, later patron and father of the first king of Portugal.

The Sé de Braga is the oldest cathedral in Portugal and one of the most historically significant in the Iberian Peninsula. Construction began in 1070 under Bishop Pedro, on the site of an earlier Visigothic church. Count Henry of Burgundy and his wife Countess Teresa, parents of Afonso Henriques, who would become the first king of Portugal in 1139, were later patrons of the cathedral and are entombed there. The present building represents nearly a thousand years of architectural evolution: a Romanesque portal and nave from the 11th century, Gothic chapels, a Manueline exterior screen added by Archbishop Diogo de Sousa in the early 16th century, and an extravagantly baroque interior including the magnificent pipe organs (1737 and 1738). The cathedral treasury holds outstanding silver and ecclesiastical objects. The tombs of Count Henry and Countess Teresa are in the Chapel of the Kings.
