About Bom Jesus do Monte

An iconic 18th-century baroque hilltop sanctuary reached by a theatrical zigzag stairway of chapels, and the world's oldest water-powered funicular (1882), the first in Iberia, one of Portugal's most visited pilgrimage sites.

Bom Jesus do Monte, the Good Jesus of the Mount, is the most architecturally spectacular pilgrimage sanctuary in Portugal and one of the most visited religious sites in the country. The sanctuary stands on a wooded hilltop 5 kilometres east of Braga, reached by an extraordinary Baroque stairway built between 1722 and 1811. The stairway consists of a series of zigzag flights ascending 116 metres over 573 steps, punctuated by 17 chapels depicting the Stations of the Cross, elaborate fountains at each landing representing the Five Senses and the Three Virtues, and theatrical Baroque sculptures throughout. At the summit, a neoclassical church (1784) commands sweeping views over Braga and the Minho. The funicular railway connecting the base to the summit, opened in 1882, powered by water counterbalance, is the oldest operating hydraulic funicular in the world.

Did you know? The funicular at Bom Jesus (1882) is the oldest hydraulic funicular in continuous operation anywhere in the world, it works entirely by water counterbalance, with no engine: the upper car is filled with water and descends, pulling the lower car up.
