About Arco da Porta Nova
Braga's elegant 18th-century baroque city gate, the Arch of the New Gate, the main ceremonial entrance to the historic centre, commissioned by Archbishop Gaspar de Bragança in 1772.
The Arco da Porta Nova, the Arch of the New Gate, is the principal ceremonial gateway to Braga's historic centre, a graceful baroque arch that marks the transition from the modern city to the medieval street pattern of the old town. The arch was built in 1772 to designs attributed to the architect André Soares, commissioned by Archbishop Gaspar de Bragança as part of the ambitious programme of baroque urban improvements to Braga. It replaces an earlier medieval gateway on the same site. The arch is decorated with the arms of Archbishop Gaspar de Bragança, classical pilasters, and a carved figure of the Virgin at the top. It spans the Rua do Souto, the main pedestrian street leading from the archbishop's palace to the cathedral, and passing through it is the traditional arrival point for visitors to the historic centre.
Did you know? The Arco da Porta Nova was designed by André Soares, the master of the distinctive Braga Baroque style, more exuberant and ornate than Lisbon's Pombaline baroque, who also created the Palácio do Raio with its extraordinary rococo blue-and-white azulejo facade, one of the most beautiful buildings in Braga.
