About Waterlooplein Flea Market
Amsterdam's oldest and most famous flea market, a daily outdoor market on the square that was once the heart of the Jewish quarter, selling vintage clothes, antiques, and oddities.
The Waterlooplein Flea Market (Waterlooplein Vlooienmarkt) is Amsterdam's oldest and best-known street market, operating on the square of the same name near the Stopera (the combined city hall and opera house). The market has its origins in the nineteenth century when the square was the commercial heart of Amsterdam's Jewish neighbourhood, a place where the Jewish poor sold second-hand goods, clothes, and household items. After the devastating destruction of Amsterdam's Jewish community during World War II, the market resumed in a much-changed neighbourhood and became famous across Europe as a destination for vintage clothes, antiques, curiosities, books, records, bicycles, and miscellaneous collectibles. Today approximately 300 stalls operate daily Monday through Saturday, making it one of the largest daily flea markets in Europe. The adjacent Stopera, an enormous 1980s building housing the city hall and the Dutch National Opera, provides a striking modernist backdrop.
Did you know? The word "Waterlooplein" market gave rise to the Dutch word "vlooienmarkt" (flea market), the term was coined specifically for this market in the late 19th century.
