About Amsterdam Centraal Station
Amsterdam's iconic railway terminus, a grand neo-Gothic and neo-Renaissance palace built in 1889, which serves as the architectural gateway to the city and one of the busiest stations in Europe.
Amsterdam Centraal Station is not only the main railway hub of the Netherlands but one of the most architecturally significant railway stations in Europe. Designed by the architect Pierre Cuypers, who also designed the Rijksmuseum, and opened in 1889, the station building is a masterpiece of late-nineteenth-century Dutch architecture, combining neo-Gothic structure with Renaissance detailing in an elaborate red brick and stone facade that confronts the city along the IJ waterfront. The station was controversially built on three artificial islands in the IJ, blocking Amsterdam's historic waterfront view to the north, a decision that was bitterly contested at the time but is now accepted as one of the defining elements of Amsterdam's urban landscape. Today the station handles approximately 250,000 passengers per day, serving national rail services, international trains to Paris, Brussels, London, and Berlin, as well as Amsterdam's metro, tram, and bus networks, and the free IJ ferry.
Did you know? Amsterdam Centraal was designed by the same architect (Pierre Cuypers) who designed the Rijksmuseum, and the two buildings share many architectural features, leading to the joke that tourists confuse them.
