About Brouwerij 't IJ
Amsterdam's most iconic craft brewery, producing organic beers in a working windmill since 1985, located in the historic De Gooyer windmill in the Oosterparkbuurt neighbourhood.
Brouwerij 't IJ is Amsterdam's most famous craft brewery, operating since 1985 from within the base of the De Gooyer windmill, a wooden octagonal mill built in 1725 and one of the few remaining windmills in Amsterdam. The brewery was founded by musician Kaspar Peterson during a period when Dutch brewing was dominated by large industrial breweries producing standardised lager, and it was among the pioneers of the Dutch craft beer revival. Today it produces a range of organic beers under names that reflect Amsterdam's water-based history: Columbus, Natte (Wet), Struis (Ostrich), Zatte (Drunk), and IJwit (IJ White). The small taproom at the base of the windmill opens for tastings daily and is one of Amsterdam's most atmospheric drinking spots. The brewery also operates a small distillery producing jenever (Dutch gin) and other spirits. The De Gooyer windmill itself was moved to its current location in 1814 and is a protected national monument.
Did you know? Brouwerij 't IJ was founded in 1985 in a building originally used as bathhouses for the neighbourhood, the brewery uses one of the original bathtubs as a fermentation vessel.
