Amsterdam Noord (Amsterdam North) is the borough on the northern shore of the IJ waterway, traditionally separated from the rest of the city by the wide water and accessible only by ferry or the ring road tunnel. For most of the twentieth century it was an industrial area dominated by the shipyards and factories of the NDSM district and the Shell oil company's Amsterdam headquarters. As deindustrialisation reduced the need for heavy industry, large areas became available for redevelopment, and from the 2000s onward Amsterdam Noord transformed rapidly into one of the most creative and dynamic neighbourhoods in the Netherlands. It is home to the EYE Film Museum, the A'DAM Lookout tower, the NDSM Wharf cultural complex, numerous architecture and design firms, creative studios, restaurants, and music venues. The free ferry from Amsterdam Centraal takes just five minutes and provides one of the city's most striking views.
