The Tropenmuseum (Tropics Museum) is one of the largest ethnographic museums in the world and one of Amsterdam's most fascinating institutions. Housed in a spectacular neo-Renaissance building constructed between 1916 and 1926 to house the Royal Tropical Institute, the museum contains collections of objects, photographs, and artefacts from the cultures of Africa, Asia, Latin America, the Pacific, and the Middle East. Originally conceived as a showcase for the Dutch colonial empire, particularly the Dutch East Indies (Indonesia) and Suriname, the museum has evolved significantly since the 1970s, adopting a more critical and contextual approach to its collections and their colonial origins. Today it presents its extraordinary holdings through immersive exhibitions that combine objects, sounds, scents, and multimedia to recreate aspects of different world cultures. The building itself is architecturally spectacular, with its central Great Hall surrounded by galleries on multiple levels and lit by an enormous glass roof.
