About Concertgebouw

One of the world's finest concert halls, built in 1888 and home to the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, renowned for its perfect acoustics and grand neo-Renaissance architecture.

The Concertgebouw (Concert Building) is one of the most celebrated concert halls in the world, frequently cited alongside Carnegie Hall in New York and the Vienna Musikverein as one of the three greatest concert venues on the planet. Built between 1883 and 1888 in a neo-Renaissance style designed by Adolf Leonard van Gendt, the building stands at the southern end of Museumplein and is home to the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra (Koninklijk Concertgebouworkest), consistently ranked among the world's top five orchestras. The main hall, Grote Zaal, seats 2,037 people and is celebrated for its acoustics, a reverberation time of approximately 2.0 seconds, achieved through a combination of the hall's rectangular "shoebox" shape, wooden panels, and plaster. The building also contains the smaller Recital Hall (Kleine Zaal). Over a million people attend events at the Concertgebouw each year. The free Wednesday lunchtime concerts, the Lunchpauze concerts, are a beloved Amsterdam tradition.

Did you know? The Concertgebouw's main hall was built without any acoustic calculations, architect Van Gendt designed it by studying other great halls, and it accidentally achieved near-perfect acoustics.
