About De Pijp
Amsterdam's most vibrant bohemian neighbourhood, a cosmopolitan mix of galleries, independent cafés, ethnic restaurants, and the famous Albert Cuyp Market.
De Pijp (The Pipe) is Amsterdam's most exciting and culturally diverse neighbourhood, built in the 1880s as working-class housing for the labourers driving Amsterdam's late-nineteenth-century expansion. The neighbourhood takes its name from the long, narrow street plan, the blocks of apartments resembled tobacco pipes when viewed from above. Today it is Amsterdam's most cosmopolitan district, home to a remarkable mix of Dutch locals, Moroccan and Turkish communities, students, artists, and young professionals. Its streets are lined with independent cafés, galleries, ethnic restaurants representing cuisines from across the globe, concept stores, and boutique hotels. The Albert Cuyp Market runs through its heart daily. Gerard Douplein, the lively neighbourhood square, is one of the best places in Amsterdam to sit outside and watch the city go by. Heineken's original brewery complex is also located here. The area was also home to Surinamese, Ghanaian, and Indonesian communities, making its restaurant scene among the most diverse in the Netherlands.
Did you know? De Pijp was Amsterdam's most densely populated neighbourhood in the early 20th century, some apartments housed entire families of 8-10 people in 3-4 rooms.
