About Hortus Botanicus Amsterdam
One of the world's oldest botanical gardens, founded in 1638 as a medicinal herb garden, it played a crucial role in spreading coffee, tea, and palm oil across the world from its 17th-century seed collection.
The Hortus Botanicus Amsterdam is one of the world's oldest botanical gardens, with a history stretching back to 1638 when it was established as a medicinal herb garden (hortus medicus) for Amsterdam's physicians and apothecaries. Located in the Plantage neighbourhood alongside Artis Zoo, the garden today covers 1.2 hectares and contains over 6,000 plant species from across the world, including extraordinary collections of tropical plants housed in three large greenhouses (including a remarkable Palm House and a three-climate greenhouse). The garden played a pivotal role in Dutch colonial history: VOC ships brought seeds and plants from the East and West Indies to the Hortus, which then propagated and distributed them worldwide. The Hortus was instrumental in spreading coffee plants from Arabia, tea from China and Japan, and cinnamon from Sri Lanka to European cultivation. A 300-year-old Eastern Cape cycad is one of the garden's most treasured specimens and is considered the oldest pot plant in the world.
Did you know? A coffee plant in the Hortus Botanicus is the direct ancestor of the entire Brazilian coffee industry, a cutting from this plant was taken to Suriname in 1706 and eventually spread to Brazil.
