About Torres de Serranos
The magnificent 14th-century Gothic north gate of Valencia, two soaring towers that served successively as a city gateway, a noble prison, and a safe haven for city archives; one of the finest surviving examples of civic Gothic architecture in Spain.
The Torres de Serranos are the northern gate towers of Valencia's medieval city walls, built between 1392 and 1398 by the master builder Pere Balaguer in a pure and elegant Valencian Gothic style. They are two octagonal towers flanking an impressive central arch, built on the site of an older Roman and Moorish gate. The towers served as the main ceremonial entrance to medieval Valencia, where the city's monarch would enter during royal visits. They later served as a prison for noble criminals, and during the Civil War, the city government used them as a safe storage vault for works of art from the Prado Museum. Free to enter on Sundays, they can be climbed for views over the Turia garden below.
Did you know? During the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939), the Republican government, which was based in Valencia from late 1936 to 1937 when Madrid was under Nationalist siege, used the Torres de Serranos as a repository for some of the most important paintings from the Prado Museum, evacuated to Valencia for safekeeping.
