About Palacio del Marqués de Dos Aguas
Valencia's most extravagant building, an 18th-century palace with an extraordinary alabaster portal considered the most spectacular example of Churrigueresque decoration in Spain, now housing the National Museum of Ceramics.
The Palacio del Marqués de Dos Aguas is Valencia's most extravagant building, a Gothic palace remodelled in the 1740s in a style of almost unhinged Baroque ornamentation. The defining feature is the main portal, designed by the painter Hipólito Rovira Mears and carved in alabaster by Ignacio Vergara: a surging composition of naked human figures, flowing water, tropical vegetation, and allegorical figures surrounding two giant figures representing the two rivers (the 'two waters') from which the family took its name. The palace now houses the Museo Nacional de Cerámica González Martí, with extensive collections of Spanish and Valencian ceramics across five centuries.
Did you know? The painter Hipólito Rovira Mears, who designed the portal, spent the last years of his life in an asylum. Whether his mental illness contributed to the extraordinary imagination evident in the portal design, or whether the portal is simply a product of the extreme Baroque fashion of the time, is a question that art historians still debate.
