Bioparc Valencia is one of Europe's most innovative zoo designs, opened in 2008 on the site of the old Valencia zoo in the Parque de Cabecera. The park is built around the philosophy of 'zoo-immersion': rather than displaying animals in cages or behind obvious barriers, the park recreates African ecosystems, savannah, equatorial forest, wetlands, Madagascar, in which visitors and animals appear to share the same spaces, with barriers concealed in the landscape. The park houses over 4,000 animals from 250 species, including African elephants, hippos, gorillas, meerkats, flamingos, lions, and a large collection of Madagascar species. It is consistently ranked among the best zoos in Europe for its design philosophy and animal welfare standards.
