L'Hemisfèric is the IMAX cinema and planetarium of Valencia's City of Arts and Sciences complex, designed by Santiago Calatrava and opened in 1998. The building is designed to look like a giant human eye: the main dome is the eyeball, the retractable roof structure is the eyelid, and the surrounding reflecting pool mirrors the entire structure so that the eye appears to look up from the water. The building's interior houses a hemispheric IMAX screen for films and a digital planetarium for astronomy presentations. It was the first building of the City of Arts and Sciences to open, and its spectacular form helped establish Valencia's new cultural district as an international destination.
Did you know? L'Hemisfèric's retractable eyelid roof structure, the most technically complex part of the building, can open and close in about 30 minutes. When open, the dome structure is exposed and can function as an open-air amphitheatre for performances.
