The museum occupies two main buildings: a purpose-built modern gallery space and an adjacent section that preserves part of the old Torres de Quart city wall. The permanent collection includes major holdings of 20th-century Spanish art, with particular strength in the work of Valencian-born sculptor Julio González, one of the most important sculptors of the 20th century and a major influence on Picasso, as well as significant collections of Spanish avant-garde painting and photography. The IVAM also hosts major international temporary exhibitions and is considered one of the most dynamic exhibition venues in Spain.
Did you know? Julio González, whose work fills a dedicated wing of the IVAM, taught Pablo Picasso the technique of iron welding during their collaboration in Paris in the late 1920s and early 1930s. Without González's influence, Picasso's metal sculptures, including the famous 'Man with Sheep', would never have been created.
