About El Cabanyal
Valencia's historic fishermen's neighbourhood beside the sea, a unique grid of 19th-century neo-Mudéjar houses with colourful ceramic tile facades, saved from demolition in 2010 and now one of the most creative and colourful urban areas in Valencia.
El Cabanyal is the historic fishermen's neighbourhood of Valencia, located just behind the Malvarrosa beach. The neighbourhood grew up in the 19th century as a fishing village independent of Valencia, and its street plan reflects this origin: a simple rectangular grid of streets running parallel and perpendicular to the shoreline, lined with two-storey houses whose facades are covered with hand-painted ceramic tiles in a variety of colours, patterns, and styles. The neighbourhood was threatened with demolition from the 1990s to 2010, when a road extension project would have destroyed a significant portion of its historic fabric. Public protest, led by artists and residents, successfully stopped the project. El Cabanyal is now being restored and has become one of the most creative and artistically active neighbourhoods in Valencia.
Did you know? El Cabanyal's street grid is perfectly oriented to the sea, all streets run either parallel or perpendicular to the shoreline, because the neighbourhood was originally designed as a fishing village where access to the sea was the primary organising principle.
