Oceanogràfic

Oceanogràfic features on the Gingerguide audio walk through Valencia. Give it roughly ~180 min: enough to look, hear a two to three minute story on the spot, and ask the AI guide whatever the story leaves open.

About Oceanogràfic

Europe's largest aquarium, a spectacular complex of ten pavilions by architect Félix Candela housing 45,000 animals from 500 species in habitats representing the world's major marine ecosystems, from the Mediterranean to the Arctic.

The Oceanogràfic is Europe's largest aquarium and one of the most impressive marine life attractions in the world. Designed by Félix Candela and built as part of the City of Arts and Sciences complex, the facility opened in 2003 and covers an area of 110,000 square metres. It houses approximately 45,000 animals from 500 species, arranged in ten major pavilions representing distinct marine environments: the Mediterranean, the Temperate Sea, the Tropical Sea, the Red Sea, the Oceans (with the famous underwater tunnel through the main shark tank), the Arctic, the Antarctic, the Coral Reef, the Freshwater exhibits, and the Islands. The building's architecture, a series of hyperbolic paraboloid concrete shells resembling giant white flowers set in surrounding water, is itself a major attraction.

Did you know? The Oceanogràfic's main shark tank, visible through the famous underwater acrylic tunnel, holds approximately 7 million litres of water and contains several species of shark, large rays, and over 100 other marine species, making it one of the largest shark tanks in Europe.
