The Albufera is a large coastal lagoon and wetland area 10 kilometres south of Valencia, separated from the sea by a narrow sandbar and surrounded by rice paddies and reed beds. The lagoon covers approximately 23 square kilometres and is fed by rivers draining the Valencia coastal plain. The surrounding wetlands and rice fields form one of the most important bird habitats in Spain, with over 250 species recorded including herons, flamingos, egrets, and rare ducks. The Albufera is also of immense gastronomic significance: the short-grain rice varieties grown here are the authentic ingredient for Valencian paella, and the fishing village of El Palmar on the lagoon edge is where the dish is claimed to have originated. The area is accessible by bus or car from Valencia.
