The Barrio del Carmen is the historic heart of Valencia, the area within the medieval walls of the city that preserves the street plan and, in some cases, the actual fabric of the original Roman city. The neighbourhood is bounded on the north and west by sections of the ancient walls: the 2nd-century Roman city wall and the 14th-century Gothic city wall with its two great gateways, the Torres de Serranos and the Torres de Quart. Within these boundaries, the neighbourhood combines genuine historical depth, Roman remains, medieval churches, Gothic palaces, with a contemporary bohemian character: street art, independent cafés and bars, art galleries, and some of the finest tapas in Valencia.
