About Mercado Central
One of the largest and most beautiful covered food markets in Europe, an Art Nouveau masterpiece completed in 1928 with 8,000 square metres of ironwork and stained glass housing over 300 stalls of fresh produce, seafood, and local specialities.
Valencia's Mercado Central is one of the architectural highlights of the city and one of the finest functioning food markets in the world. The building was completed in 1928 by architects Francesc Guàrdia Vidal and Alexandre Soler March in a spectacular Art Nouveau style, featuring an enormous central dome, vast stained glass windows, ornate ironwork, and ceramic tile decorations. The market covers 8,000 square metres and houses approximately 300 stalls selling the produce of the Valencia region: fresh fish and seafood from the Mediterranean, local vegetables and citrus fruits, the rice varieties essential for paella, charcuterie and cheese, fresh herbs, and prepared foods. The market operates from early morning until early afternoon, six days a week, and is as popular with local residents as with visitors.
Did you know? The Mercado Central of Valencia receives approximately 80,000 visitors per day on busy weekends, making it one of the most visited attractions in Valencia and one of the most trafficked food markets in all of Europe.
