About Valencia Cathedral

A Gothic cathedral begun in 1252 on the site of the main mosque, home to the Holy Grail, a first-century agate chalice identified by popes since the Middle Ages as the cup used by Christ at the Last Supper.

Valencia Cathedral is a magnificent Gothic building begun in 1252 on the site of the main mosque of the city, which was in turn built on the site of a Roman temple and a Visigothic cathedral. The building shows the characteristic historical layering of Valencian religious architecture: Romanesque, Gothic, Baroque, and Neoclassical elements are all present in different parts of the structure. The cathedral's most famous possession is the Holy Chalice, the Santo Cáliz, a first-century AD agate cup that multiple popes have formally identified as the authentic chalice used by Jesus Christ at the Last Supper. The adjacent Miguelete tower (El Miguelete) is the symbol of Valencia and can be climbed for panoramic views.

Did you know? Valencia Cathedral has four different façades in four different architectural styles, the Puerta del Palau is Romanesque, the main Baroque door was added in 1703, the Puerta de los Apóstoles is Gothic, and the building overall is predominantly Gothic, making it a textbook of architectural history.
