- Central Mineral Baths: A striped, majolica-trimmed palace of a bathhouse from the early 1900s, once where Sofia came to bathe in its hot springs and now the city history museum, with free mineral taps still flowing outside. 0.6 km to the next stop
- Ivan Vazov National Theatre: Bulgaria's grand national theatre, a richly ornamented building of 1907 by the Viennese firm Fellner & Helmer, its columned portico and golden Apollo facing the fountains of the City Garden.
Day 2
Day 2 covers 6 stops over about 9.8 km as the crow flies, from Russian Church of St Nicholas to Boyana Church. ≈ 9.8 km between stops, straight line
Morning

- Church of St Sofia: The ancient red-brick basilica that gave the city its name, a sixth-century church over a Roman necropolis, with the Monument to the Unknown Soldier and its eternal flame beside it. 0.1 km to the next stop
- Alexander Nevsky Cathedral: The towering gold-domed Neo-Byzantine cathedral at the heart of Sofia, raised as a memorial to the Russian soldiers who died freeing Bulgaria, one of the largest Orthodox churches in the world. 1.5 km to the next stop
Afternoon
- Borisova Gradina: Sofia's oldest and best-loved park, laid out in the 1880s and named for a prince who became king, a green expanse of tree-lined alleys, lakes and monuments that is the city's favourite escape. 1.7 km to the next stop
- National Palace of Culture: A colossal congress and cultural centre from the socialist era, opened in 1981 for Bulgaria's 1,300th anniversary, set at the head of a long park of fountains and water cascades below Mount Vitosha. 6.2 km to the next stop
- Boyana Church: A tiny medieval church at the foot of Mount Vitosha, a UNESCO World Heritage Site treasured for its astonishingly lifelike frescoes of 1259, painted centuries before the Italian Renaissance.
Distances are straight-line between stops; streets add a little.
