About Banya Bashi Mosque
Sofia's only working mosque, a graceful Ottoman building of the 1560s with a great lead dome and slender minaret, raised over the hot springs and part of the city's famous cluster of faiths.
The Banya Bashi Mosque is the only functioning mosque in Sofia, a fine survivor of the Ottoman centuries built around 1566, in the 1560s. Its name means something like 'many baths' or 'head of the baths', for it stands over the city's hot mineral springs, among which it was raised. By tradition its design is credited to the great Ottoman court architect Mimar Sinan, builder of the imperial mosques of Istanbul and Edirne.
The mosque is a square prayer hall under a single lead-covered dome about fifteen metres across, with a tall minaret beside it and walls that alternate dressed stone with bands of red brick. Inside are a painted dome, a tiled mihrab and minbar, and a great chandelier. It stands within a few hundred metres of the Sofia Synagogue and the city's churches, part of what is fondly called Sofia's square of religious tolerance.
