About National Palace of Culture

A colossal congress and cultural centre from the socialist era, opened in 1981 for Bulgaria's 1,300th anniversary, set at the head of a long park of fountains and water cascades below Mount Vitosha.

The National Palace of Culture, known by its Bulgarian initials NDK, is a vast congress and cultural centre at the southern end of Vitosha Boulevard, opened in 1981 to mark the 1,300th anniversary of the Bulgarian state. Often described as the largest centre of its kind in southeastern Europe, it is a monumental building of the late communist period, covering some 123,000 square metres over eight floors.

Its many halls host conferences, concerts and festivals; the largest seats over three thousand people, and the interior is filled with murals, mosaics and sculpture by Bulgarian artists. In front stretches a long park, Bulgaria Square, with a dramatic water cascade and fountains that are lit at night, and from its terraces the Vitosha massif fills the southern sky. The gardens are a favourite gathering place for Sofians.
