About Central Mineral Baths
A striped, majolica-trimmed palace of a bathhouse from the early 1900s, once where Sofia came to bathe in its hot springs and now the city history museum, with free mineral taps still flowing outside.
The Central Mineral Baths are a landmark of central Sofia, a graceful Vienna-Secession building of yellow plaster banded in red and white and trimmed with colourful ceramic majolica. Designed by Petko Momchilov and Friedrich Grünanger, the baths opened in 1913 over the site of an older Ottoman bathhouse and served the city, which is rich in mineral springs, as its public baths until 1986.
After the baths closed and the building fell into disrepair, it was restored and reopened in 2015 as the Sofia History Museum, which tells the city's story from prehistory and Roman Serdica onward. The springs, though, still flow: at taps on the side of the building and a fountain in the park, locals queue to fill their bottles with the hot mineral water for free, keeping an old Sofia ritual alive.
