About Boyana Church
A tiny medieval church at the foot of Mount Vitosha, a UNESCO World Heritage Site treasured for its astonishingly lifelike frescoes of 1259, painted centuries before the Italian Renaissance.
The Boyana Church, in a leafy suburb at the foot of Mount Vitosha about eight kilometres from the centre, is one of Bulgaria's greatest treasures and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Small and unassuming from outside, it was built in three stages, the oldest part in the tenth or eleventh century, the central part in the thirteenth. It is famous above all for the frescoes painted in 1259.
Commissioned by a local lord, Sebastokrator Kaloyan, and his wife Desislava, those frescoes cover the walls with some 240 figures of extraordinary, individual humanity, which many scholars see as foreshadowing the Italian Renaissance by nearly two centuries; they include lifelike portraits of the donors and the royal couple of the day. To protect the fragile paint, entry is strictly limited to small groups and short, timed visits.
