About Alexander Nevsky Cathedral

The towering gold-domed Neo-Byzantine cathedral at the heart of Sofia, raised as a memorial to the Russian soldiers who died freeing Bulgaria, one of the largest Orthodox churches in the world.

The St Alexander Nevsky Cathedral is the great symbol of Sofia, a vast Neo-Byzantine church crowned with gilded domes that rise above the city centre. It was built as a temple-monument to honour the Russian soldiers who died in the war of 1877-78 that freed Bulgaria from Ottoman rule, and it is named for the medieval Russian prince and saint Alexander Nevsky. The foundation stone was laid in 1882, and most of the building went up between 1904 and 1912.

Designed chiefly by the Russian architect Alexander Pomerantsev, it is one of the largest Eastern Orthodox churches in the world, holding thousands of worshippers; its gold central dome reaches about 45 metres and its bell tower 53 metres. Inside are coloured Italian marbles, onyx and alabaster, mosaics from Venice and the Lord's Prayer written in gold around the dome. The crypt holds a celebrated museum of Bulgarian icons.
