About Palacio de las Dueñas

The private palace of the House of Alba, one of Spain's most powerful aristocratic families, where the poet Antonio Machado was born and a magnificent Mudéjar courtyard survives nearly intact.

The Palacio de las Dueñas is one of Seville's most important private palaces, the Seville residence of the House of Alba, the most titled noble house in the world, with more aristocratic titles than any family in history. The palace dates from the 15th century and was expanded over the following two centuries. Its main courtyard is one of the finest surviving examples of late Mudéjar architecture in Seville, with elaborately carved plasterwork arches, geometric azulejo tilework, and a central fountain. The poet Antonio Machado, one of the greatest Spanish poets of the 20th century and a major figure in the Generation of 98 literary movement, was born in the palace in 1875, as his father was an employee of the ducal household. The palace opened to the public in 2016 following the death of the 18th Duchess of Alba, Cayetana Fitz-James Stuart.

Did you know? The House of Alba, owners of this palace, holds more aristocratic titles than any other family in history, over 50 noble titles including 7 dukedoms and 19 marquessates, making them the most titled family in the Guinness Book of Records.
