About Hospital de los Venerables
A magnificent 17th-century Baroque building in the heart of Santa Cruz, once a retirement home for elderly priests, now housing superb Velázquez paintings and an extraordinary gilded church.
The Hospital de los Venerables Sacerdotes was built between 1675 and 1697 as a retirement home and care facility for elderly and infirm Catholic priests, the venerables (worthy ones) of its name. The building, designed by Leonardo de Figueroa, is one of the finest examples of Sevillian Baroque architecture, with a beautiful central courtyard surrounded by two-storey arcades and a church of extraordinary quality. The church interior is one of the most gilded and ornate spaces in Seville, with frescoes by Juan de Valdés Leal and his son Lucas Valdés covering almost every surface. The building was restored in the 1990s and now houses the Focus-Abengoa Foundation, which maintains a superb art collection including key works by Diego Velázquez, making it the only place in Seville where important originals by the city's most famous painter can be seen.
Did you know? The Hospital de los Venerables is the only place in Seville where original paintings by Diego Velázquez, born in the city in 1599, can be seen, including works from his early Sevillian period.
