About Iglesia del Salvador
The second largest church in Seville, a monumental 17th-century Baroque masterpiece built on the site of the city's main mosque, with a magnificent gilded altarpiece and an outdoor life beloved by young Sevillanos.
The Iglesia del Salvador, Church of the Saviour, is the second largest church in Seville after the Cathedral, and one of the great Baroque monuments of southern Spain. It was built between 1674 and 1712 on the site of the main congregational mosque of Islamic Seville, incorporating elements of the original mosque including the minaret stump that now forms part of one of the church's towers and the ablution courtyard that became the Patio de los Naranjos. The interior is overwhelming in its Baroque splendour: the main nave rises to an extraordinary height, and the altarpieces, particularly the main retablo, are among the finest gilded Baroque woodcarvings in Andalusia. Outside, the Plaza del Salvador, with its steps and open space, is one of the most popular gathering spots for young Sevillanos.
Did you know? The church was built on the site of the main mosque of Islamic Seville; one of its bell towers incorporates the base of the original 9th-century minaret, still visible in the masonry.
