About Metropol Parasol (Las Setas)
The world's largest wooden structure, a spectacular wavy mushroom-like canopy completed in 2011 hovering over Roman ruins, with a rooftop walkway offering stunning panoramic views of Seville.
The Metropol Parasol, universally known to Sevillanos as Las Setas (The Mushrooms), is one of the most ambitious and controversial works of contemporary architecture in Spain. Designed by German architect Jürgen Mayer and completed in 2011, the structure consists of six interlocking giant mushroom-like parasols rising up to 28 metres above the Plaza de la Encarnación. Built from laminated timber reinforced with steel and concrete, it is recognised as the world's largest wooden structure. The parasol was built over the site of a Roman settlement; during construction, extensive Roman ruins were discovered, and these are now visible in the Antiquarium museum beneath the structure. The rooftop walkway winds through the mushroom canopy offering the most spectacular urban panorama in Seville, taking in the Giralda, the Cathedral, and the old city rooftops.
Did you know? The Metropol Parasol is the world's largest wooden structure, built from laminated timber panels reinforced with steel and polyurethane, a technical achievement unprecedented in architectural history.
