About Plaza de Toros de la Maestranza
The oldest and most prestigious bullring in Spain, built in 1765, with a magnificent Baroque exterior and a celebrated museum, and the setting that inspired Bizet's opera Carmen.
The Real Maestranza de Caballería de Sevilla is the most famous and celebrated bullring in the world, and the oldest still in use in Spain. Construction began in 1749 and the ring was completed in 1765. With a capacity of 12,500 spectators and a distinctive oval shape, the Maestranza has hosted the most celebrated matadors in bullfighting history. Its Baroque exterior of white and yellow is one of Seville's most iconic images. The bullfighting season runs from Easter to October, with the most prestigious corridas during Seville's Feria de Abril. Visitors who do not attend a corrida can still explore the ring via the excellent museum, which contains costumes, posters, and artworks documenting bullfighting culture. The setting inspired Prosper Mérimée's novella Carmen, later adapted by Bizet into the world's most famous opera.
Did you know? The Maestranza is the oldest bullring in Spain still in use, predating Madrid's Las Ventas by nearly two centuries, and is considered the spiritual home of bullfighting.
