About Archivo General de Indias
A UNESCO World Heritage 16th-century building containing all the documents of Spanish colonisation of the Americas, including Christopher Columbus's own letters and Magellan's navigational charts.
The Archivo General de Indias is one of the most historically important archives in the world, housed in the beautiful 16th-century Lonja de Mercaderes (Merchants Exchange) building adjacent to the Cathedral and the Alcázar. Built between 1584 and 1598 by architect Juan de Herrera, the same architect responsible for El Escorial, the building was converted into an archive in 1785 on the orders of King Carlos III to centralise all documents relating to the Spanish colonial administration of the Americas. The archive contains over 80 million pages of documents spanning from 1492 to the early 20th century, including Columbus's letters and journals, Magellan's charts, royal decrees, administrative correspondence, and the personal letters of countless individuals who participated in the colonisation of the Americas. It was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987 alongside the Cathedral and the Alcázar.
Did you know? The Archivo de Indias contains the personal letters of Christopher Columbus, the actual manuscripts written in his own hand, making it one of the most intimate connections to the Age of Discovery anywhere in the world.
