About Rheinturm

Düsseldorf's 240-metre telecommunications tower on the Rhine, featuring the world's largest decimal clock display on its shaft and a revolving restaurant with panoramic views.

The Rheinturm is Düsseldorf's distinctive telecommunications tower, rising 240.5 metres above the Rhine bank and dominating the city's southern skyline. Completed in 1982, it serves as a transmission tower for television and radio signals across the region. The tower's most unusual feature is its decimal clock, the world's tallest, which runs along the outside of the shaft using 62 round light points to display the ordinary 24-hour time as base-10 digits (the lit dots show the hours, minutes, and seconds read off as decimal numbers). At 168 metres, a viewing platform offers panoramic views across Düsseldorf, the Rhine, and on clear days as far as Cologne. The revolving restaurant sits just below the observation deck and completes a full rotation approximately every hour. The Rheinturm is most spectacularly photographed from the Media Harbour waterfront, where Frank Gehry's buildings in the foreground create a striking architectural contrast.

Did you know? The Rheinturm's light sculpture, the Lichtzeitpegel, is recognised by Guinness as the world's largest digital clock, it shows ordinary 24-hour time spelled out as columns of glowing dots read as decimal numbers.
