About Tonhalle Düsseldorf

Düsseldorf's world-class concert hall housed in a 1926 former planetarium by Wilhelm Kreis, its circular domed architecture creating exceptional acoustics in the Ehrenhof park complex by the Rhine.

The Tonhalle Düsseldorf is one of Germany's finest concert halls and one of the most architecturally distinctive, housed in a former planetarium building completed in 1926 by the architect Wilhelm Kreis. The spherical domed structure, built as part of the Ehrenhof park complex for the 1926 GeSoLei exhibition, was converted into a concert hall in the 1970s after its astronomical function became obsolete. The circular architecture creates unique acoustics: the sound disperses uniformly from the central stage to the surrounding audience in a way that is quite different from traditional rectangular concert hall designs. The Düsseldorfer Symphoniker is the resident orchestra. The Tonhalle occupies a prime position in the Ehrenhof, a cultural park complex that also contains the Museum Kunstpalast (with a fine art collection and exhibition programme) and the NRW Forum for digital culture.

Did you know? The Tonhalle was originally built as a planetarium in 1926 for the GeSoLei exhibition, the spherical shape ideal for star projections turned out to be equally ideal for music.
