About Schloss Benrath
An exquisite 18th-century Rococo summer palace south of Düsseldorf, surrounded by a perfectly symmetrical baroque garden and lake, one of the finest pleasure palaces in the Rhineland.
Schloss Benrath is one of the finest examples of Rococo palace architecture in Germany, completed in 1770 for the Elector Palatine Carl Theodor as a summer residence. Designed by the French architect Nicolas de Pigage, the pink-pastel main palace building, known as the Corps de Logis, is deceptively modest in appearance from the front while containing an intricate series of apartments and formal rooms. The building appears to be two storeys from the exterior but actually contains four floors. The palace sits at the head of a perfectly symmetrical formal garden, with a large ornamental lake in front reflecting the palace facade. Two flanking orangerie buildings complete the ensemble. The palace complex is now home to three museums: the Museum Corps de Logis documenting the palatial interiors, the Museum Europäischer Gartenkunst (Museum of European Garden Art), and the Naturkundemuseum (Natural History Museum). The garden extends to around 67 hectares and is a beloved park for Düsseldorf residents.
Did you know? Schloss Benrath appears to be a two-storey building from the outside but actually contains four storeys, the architect used clever illusions to make the palace appear more modest than it really was.
