The Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, Düsseldorf Academy of Arts, is one of the most historically important art academies in the world, with an influence on postwar art that has been disproportionately large for an institution of its size. The academy traces its roots to 1773 and is housed in a neoclassical building on the Rhine. Its faculty has included some of the most consequential artists of the 20th century. Joseph Beuys, the charismatic and controversial artist-philosopher, taught here from 1961 to 1972, his classes becoming legendary events that redefined what art education could be. Among his students were Sigmar Polke, Imi Knoebel, Blinky Palermo, and Jörg Immendorff. Gerhard Richter, one of the most celebrated painters alive, also studied and then taught at the Kunstakademie. The Becher class in photography, run by Bernd and Hilla Becher, produced Thomas Ruff, Andreas Gursky, Thomas Struth, and Candida Höfer, forming the internationally famous 'Düsseldorf Photography School'.
