About Königsallee (Kö)
Germany's most glamorous shopping boulevard, flanked by a tree-lined canal, with Chanel, Gucci, Burberry, and the finest boutiques reflecting in the water, the gilded heart of Düsseldorf.
The Königsallee, universally known as the 'Kö', is Germany's most famous and prestigious shopping boulevard, stretching for about 800 metres through the heart of Düsseldorf. What makes it unique among shopping streets is the canal running down the centre, lined on both sides by grand chestnut trees that provide shade in summer and create a golden canopy in autumn. The west side of the canal, the Westkö, hosts the luxury flagship stores of the world's great fashion houses: Chanel, Gucci, Hermès, Burberry, Louis Vuitton, Prada, and many others. The east side, the Ostkö, contains banks, office buildings, and upscale hotels. The boulevard terminates at the Triton fountain to the south and at the Cornelius Bridge to the north. It was laid out in the early 19th century and was renamed in 1851 in honour of King Friedrich Wilhelm IV of Prussia. Düsseldorf's fashion industry, the city is Germany's fashion capital, is symbolised by the Kö.
Did you know? The Königsallee was renamed in 1851 in honour of King Friedrich Wilhelm IV of Prussia, ironically, to make amends after an angry crowd had pelted him with horse dung on the street in 1848.
