The museum's permanent collection spans art from the early 20th century to the 1980s, with particular depth in German Expressionism, Constructivism, Surrealism, Abstract Expressionism, and postwar European and American art. The crowning jewel of the collection is a major assembly of works by Paul Klee, around 100 paintings, drawings, and watercolours by the Swiss-German master, one of the most important Klee holdings of any museum. The museum also holds important works by Pablo Picasso, Piet Mondrian, Henri Matisse, Wassily Kandinsky, Max Ernst, Joseph Beuys, Gerhard Richter, and many others. The building's sleek dark exterior is a Düsseldorf landmark in its own right. Together with the K21, it forms the Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen, one of the most significant public art collections in Germany.
