About Art Basel (Messe Basel)
The world's most important contemporary art fair, held every June in the Messe Basel, the global art market's most anticipated annual event, attracting 93,000 visitors and billions in sales.
Art Basel is the world's most important contemporary art fair and one of the most significant events in the global art market calendar. Founded in Basel in 1970 by the gallerists Trudl Bruckner, Ernst Beyeler, and Balz Hilt, it has grown from a regional event into the premier international art fair, with sister fairs now also taking place in Miami Beach and Hong Kong. Every June, approximately 290 of the world's best galleries from over 35 countries gather in the Messe Basel to present work ranging from blue-chip historical modernism to the newest developments in contemporary art. Around 93,000 collectors, curators, artists, museum directors, and art enthusiasts attend over the six days of the fair. The estimated value of transactions during Art Basel week regularly runs to several billion dollars. Beyond the fair itself, the city of Basel transforms for the week: additional exhibitions open in museums and galleries throughout the city, parties fill the hotels and private residences, and Basel briefly becomes the centre of the global art world. The Messe Basel exhibition centre, the main venue, has been significantly upgraded by architects Herzog & de Meuron, whose striking Hall 1 provides a spectacular setting for the world's finest gallery presentations.
Did you know? Art Basel was co-founded in 1970 by Ernst Beyeler, the same man who later established the Fondation Beyeler, one of the world's finest private art museums.
