About Museum Tinguely

A playful and kinetic museum dedicated to Jean Tinguely's animated mechanical sculptures, including his famous Fountain outside the Kunsthalle, fun for all ages.

Museum Tinguely is one of the most joyful and entertaining art museums in Switzerland, entirely devoted to the work of Jean Tinguely (1925-1991), the kinetic sculptor who grew up in Basel whose motorised, noisy, occasionally malfunctioning machines represent some of the most original and humorous art of the 20th century. Tinguely was born in Fribourg but grew up in Basel, and the city of his childhood is where his most important public work stands, most notably the Carnival Fountain (Fasnachtsbrunnen) in front of the Kunsthalle Basel, a wonderful assemblage of mechanical forms that spurt water in unpredictable directions, move their limbs, and generally behave like a mechanical fairground populated by figures from Swiss carnival tradition. Inside the museum, the kinetic sculptures range from small table-top machines to enormous room-filling constructions, all powered by electric motors and all engaged in a kind of mechanical theatre, endlessly moving, endlessly entertaining, occasionally stopping for theatrical effect. The museum building, designed by Mario Botta and opened in 1996, sits beautifully on the Rhine bank. Tinguely's work invites participation: you can press buttons, trigger movements, and become part of the mechanical performance. The atmosphere is genuinely playful and accessible to visitors of every age.

Did you know? Jean Tinguely's Carnival Fountain in front of the Kunsthalle Basel has been squirting water and moving its mechanical figures since 1977, and its unpredictable behaviour still delights visitors today.
