About Kunstmuseum Basel

The world's oldest public art museum, with a collection open to the public since 1661, housing masterpieces by Holbein the Younger, Picasso, Paul Klee, and Monet.

The Kunstmuseum Basel has a unique distinction in the history of world art: its collection has been open to the public since 1661, making it the oldest public art museum in the world. The collection was originally assembled by the city of Basel when it purchased the Amerbach Cabinet, a remarkable private collection of art, natural curiosities, and scholarly objects, preventing it from being sold abroad. This civic act of cultural preservation in the 17th century established a tradition of public access to art that would eventually become standard across Europe. Today, the Kunstmuseum is one of the finest art museums in Europe, with particular strengths in German and Swiss painting from the 15th to 17th centuries (including the most important collection of works by Hans Holbein the Younger anywhere in the world), a world-class Picasso collection numbering over 200 works, exceptional holdings of Swiss modernism including Paul Klee and Alberto Giacometti, and outstanding Impressionist and Post-Impressionist works. The museum complex also includes a substantial modern extension opened in 2016, connected to the historic main building. The Kunstmuseum's Depotbau, a new off-site storage facility, opened in 2023 and further expanded the museum's exhibition capacity.

Did you know? The Kunstmuseum Basel has been open to the public since 1661, predating the Louvre, the British Museum, and the Uffizi as public museums, making it the world's oldest public art collection.
