About Vitra Design Museum

Frank Gehry's first European building (1989) anchors an extraordinary design campus featuring buildings by Zaha Hadid, Herzog & de Meuron, SANAA, and others, a pilgrimage site for architecture lovers.

The Vitra Design Museum complex in Weil am Rhein, just across the German border from Basel, is one of the most extraordinary concentrations of significant contemporary architecture in the world. The campus was developed by the Swiss furniture manufacturer Vitra and contains a constellation of buildings by the world's most celebrated architects: Frank Gehry's Design Museum (1989), his first European building, a deconstructivist white form of angular planes and curved surfaces; Zaha Hadid's Fire Station (1993), her first completed building and now a museum space; a factory building by Nicholas Grimshaw; a conference pavilion by Tadao Ando; Herzog & de Meuron's VitraHaus (2010); SANAA's production building; an Buckminster Fuller geodesic dome; and most recently a filling station by Jean Prouvé. The Vitra Design Museum itself contains the world's most important collection of furniture design history, over 7,000 pieces of furniture from the 18th century to the present, including virtually every significant work of modern furniture design. Guided architectural tours of the campus run daily and are considered among the finest architecture tours available in Europe.

Did you know? The Vitra Campus contains buildings by Frank Gehry, Zaha Hadid, Herzog & de Meuron, SANAA, Tadao Ando, and Buckminster Fuller, all on the same few acres of land.
