About Basler Fasnacht (Carnival)

The most important carnival in Switzerland and a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage, three days of masked processions, lantern parades, fife and drum music, starting at 4am on the Monday after Ash Wednesday.

Basler Fasnacht is the most important carnival in Switzerland and one of the most extraordinary and distinctive cultural events in Central Europe, inscribed on UNESCO's List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Unlike most European carnivals, which take place before Lent, Basel's Fasnacht begins on the Monday after Ash Wednesday, making it a post-Lent carnival, a deliberate Protestant assertion that Basel does not observe the Catholic liturgical calendar. The carnival begins at precisely 4:00am on the Monday after Ash Wednesday, when all the city's lights are extinguished and thousands of masked lantern-bearers emerge into the darkness, the Morgenstraich (Morning Stroke). The lanterns, each custom-made and depicting satirical political commentary, are the centrepiece of the event. The processions continue through three days of parades (cortèges), with costumed and masked participants playing piccolo and side drum in the distinctive Fasnacht rhythm, while spectators are bombarded with satirical confetti strips called Zeedel. The carnival is characterised by political satire, musical excellence, and an atmosphere that combines genuine community spirit with biting wit.

Did you know? The Morgenstraich begins at precisely 4:00am, all the city's lights are turned off and thousands of lantern-bearers emerge in the dark. The 4am Morgenstraich has opened the carnival in this form since 1835.
