The pygmy hippopotamus, now critically endangered in the wild, has been bred successfully at Basel Zoo, and the zoo maintains an important captive breeding programme for this species. The elephant enclosure, the penguin colony, the vivarium housing reptiles and amphibians, and the aquarium are all highlights. The Children's Zoo section allows direct interaction with domestic and farm animals. The zoo is located immediately adjacent to the city's main railway station (SBB Basel), making it extremely easy to reach.
