The mill building dates from the late medieval period and has been used for paper production since the 15th century, when Basel was one of the most important centres of paper production and early book printing in the German-speaking world. The museum contains working demonstrations of traditional paper-making using water-driven machinery, you can see paper being made using the centuries-old process of beating rags into pulp, forming sheets on moulds, and pressing and drying them. There are also demonstrations of traditional printing, from early woodblock techniques through letterpress printing to modern reproduction methods. The museum traces the history of writing and writing materials from ancient Egypt through the parchment of the Middle Ages to the paper of the modern era.
